Lavishly produced, oversized print magazines overflowing with vivid content meant to provoke and inspire are increasingly rare birds. And yet, independent publisher Luis Venegas has built a mini-empire with his three titles: Fanzine137, EY! Magateen, and Candy. In an era when magazines great and small face mass extinction, tangible productions like his are increasingly uncommon. Armed with a telephone, a computer, an incredible imagination and the force of inspiration, Venegas creates his “special projects in printed paper” out of his apartment in Madrid in strictly limited editions coveted and savored by those in the know. Requesting contributions from his idols, he’s featured work from Wolfgang Tillmans, Ron Galella, and entire issues shot by Steven Klein and Marcelo Krasilcic. The latest issue of Candy, featuring James Franco on the cover shot by Terry Richardson, became a worldwide sensation and nearly sold out before it even hit the stands. Luis Venegas
